Stone Mansion in Dallas

When a client decided he wanted a stone mansion built in Dallas, Texas, he decided he wanted to have the stone and the quality he had seen in Georgian Bath.

When a local stone supplier asked us if we would be interested in a £100k labour only contract in Dallas, Texas, we leapt at the opportunity. The contract was for a mansion house, built of a timber frame, with Bath stone cladding fixed to the exterior. The stone used is mined close to Bath: Stoke Ground top bed, the softer and finer grained cousin to the base bed, with a total of 2000 cubic feet of sawn stone. The details came from the architect via drawings and through a rigorous consultative and design process, the final details were decided upon. This involved changing the 'carpentry' approach of the Americans into a traditional stone building, such as the stoolings on window cills, masonry mitres, and tight 3mm joints as opposed to the usual 7mm in the US.

All the stone was cut by the mine, worked in the yard with a traditional dragged finisih, packed for sea freight and despatched to America. We met with the local installers in Dallas and advised them on the idiosyncrasies of fixing a soft Bath stone. This included such things as how to trim in stooling and how to achieve a dragged finish.
