Gable Cross for St Lawrence

It is always very exciting for a stonemason to be able to work a stone cross, for it is such an obvious and unique example of his craft - the replacement gable cross at St. Lawrence Church, Alton, was no exception.

A stone type needed to be decided upon which was akin to the original Bath stone and would be very resilient - Clipsham was chosen. The details were taken from fragments that remained, and the overall design reconstructed. The cross was held in position using stainless steel dowel.
