Wells Cathedral Stonemasons have been recognised in the Natural Stone Awards 2006. The stonemasons have been awarded a Commendation in the category of Craftsmanship.
Following a road traffic accident, the carved stone parapet to the south-eastern corner of Grade 2 listed Gloucester Gate Bridge in London, was nearly completely destroyed.
As specialist stone contractors, Wells Cathedral Stonemasons were contracted to supply, deliver and install a new parapet. The judges said of the project
'It is good to see that the local authority is setting standards for others to folllow. The outstanding craftsmanship is not initially appreciated until one understands that the balustrade curves in two planes. This project demonstrateswhat can be done when one insists that repairs are carried out, like for like.'
The original parapet was made from red Mansfield, which is no longer available. The stone chosen for the repair was Locharbriggs Red sandstone, 20 tonnes of which was supplied from the Stancliffe Stone Company.
Fortunately, one panel survived the accident, and it was from this that the intricate detail was taken.
The parapet is made up of 9 carved panels, 6 of which are circular on plan with, each weighing over half a tonne (unworked weight). There is a coping course on top. In total, approximately 135 cubic feet of stone was worked and installed.
